Medical marijuana is new to Ohio, so it’s natural for patients to have lots of questions about cost. This short guide can help.

At Lakewood Medical Clinic, access to the many health benefits of medical marijuana is at the core of what we do. It’s important to us that cost doesn’t prevent patients from receiving the care and products they need, regardless of their qualifying condition for seeking medical marijuana. That’s why we’re determined to work with all of our patients to find the right treatment plan for their health and their wallets.

State-Mandated Costs

Some costs of medical marijuana are unavoidable under Ohio law. To purchase medical marijuana products, all patients are required to pay an annual state registration fee of $50. Discounts may be available for veterans and low-income patients, so we encourage any patients who might qualify to inquire when registering. Patients should also keep in mind that Ohio taxes will be added on to their medical marijuana purchases. The state has not yet announced the exact tax rate for medical marijuana products, but it is estimated to be around 15%.

Product Pricing

Our specialists work with our patients to determine the medical marijuana products that are right for their treatment plan, but we also know the important role budget plays in their decision regarding which products to purchase. Because of this, we offer recommendations for a range of products at a variety of price points determined by quality, quantity, and type of product.

The higher the quality of the cannabis used, the higher the price of the particular product. Quality also determines the effectiveness of the product, so while higher quality medical marijuana is more expensive, it will also provide better pain and symptom relief.

As with any other product, the price of marijuana varies based on quantity. Discounts may be available for larger quantities of certain products, though patients should keep in mind that Ohio law dictates a maximum 90-day supply.

Type of Product

There are four main types of product available for medical use in Ohio: oil, tinctures, edibles, and patches. Prices vary between these products, in part due to the concentration of active ingredient in each.

  • Oils: Oils are concentrated forms of marijuana, containing higher levels of medical cannabis. A gram costs between $20 and $60.

  • Tinctures: Tinctures are another marijuana concentrate but in a liquid form designed to be mixed into food and drink for ease of consumption. Depending on the concentration, one-ounce bottles can cost $20 to $40.

  • Edibles: Medical marijuana is sold in various foods, ranging from brownies and cookies to pizzas and burritos. This options works well for patients who may be using medical marijuana for the first time and are less comfortable with preparing their own dose. Edibles are usually priced by dosage, with each dose costing approximately $3 to $5.

  • Patches: Patches deliver a steady dose of the active ingredients in medical marijuana through the skin. They can be worn discreetly and used to provide the effects of medical marijuana consistently throughout their application. A patch is usually priced between $15 and $20.

As with everything in life, we know that cost plays an important role in the decision-making around seeking medical marijuana treatment. Our specialists at Lakewood Medical Clinic will work with you to create the medical marijuana treatment plan that’s right for you and your budget.
